Design for Change

Creating Citizens, Connections, and Community

Date:

Friday, October 8, 2010

Time:

8:30am-10:00am

Location:

Pyramid Peak B, 37th Floor

Design isn’t just about looking good. From buildings and streetscapes to products and posters, communities need to start seeing design as a tool to engage citizens, change behavior, and create the kinds of spaces, places and actions they want to see. This panel will explore several different types of design – landscapes, gathering places, and graphic design – and how communities can use them to proactively create connections, protect and enhance local character and help citizens engage with their neighbors and neighborhoods.

Ethan Kent will moderate this session.

Measuring Success

Indicators in Evolving Communities

Date:

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

Time:

11:00am-12:30pm

Location:

Pyramid Peak B, 37th Floor

At the core of everyone’s work is the desire to see progress. But how do we define it? How do we measure it? In our work with communities, how can we say with certainty, “We’ve moved forward”? This session will highlight some different approaches to indicators—some for taking stock of a community’s vital signs, others for measuring success or processing failure, and still others that lend legitimacy to unconventional planning and community-building processes.

Time:

10:30am-12:00pm

Location:

Pyramid Peak A, 37th Floor

Ever had trouble explaining the impacts of a particular planning decision to townspeople? Visualization tools make it easier for citizens and planners alike to see alternative designs and development scenarios and to understand their impact on the look, feel and function of their community. This session will introduce visualization tools that can help your town understand the trade-offs and far-reaching effects of important planning decisions. We’ll also examine different ways to use those tools to stimulate community engagement and proactive decision-making.
