Values to Actions

The Anatomy of a Squid

Date:

Thursday, October 7, 2010

Time:

10:30am-12:00pm

Location:

Castle Peak, 37th Floor

The most critical, and sometimes elusive, step in a community planning process is translating shared community values to concrete actions on the ground. At the Orton Family Foundation, we liken this stage in our work to the complex connective tissue between the soft body of a squid and its tooth-like beak. Without the gradient from soft to hard tissue, the squid tooth would be ineffective. Likewise, a gradient of careful, multi-faceted work is required to connect a community’s values with its planning decisions and actions for the future.

The Power of Stories

Date:

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

Time:

11:00am-12:30pm

Location:

Sunlight Peak, 37th Floor

Stories have the ability to transform confrontation into exchange, speeches into dialogue, and conflict into resolution. This session will focus on how to use story telling and gathering to bridge divides, catalyze engagement, and uncover deeply held shared values. You’ll learn storytelling tools and techniques, hear some heartening success stories, and come away with a renewed confidence in the power of stories to help us communicate who we are, where we’ve been and what we want for the future of our communities.

Barbara Ganley will moderate this session.

The Elephant in the Community

Date:

Friday, October 8, 2010

Time:

8:30am-10:00am

Location:

Sunlight Peak, 37th Floor

Many communities have committees dedicated to economic improvement, transportation, parks and open space, planning and zoning, recreation or education, but few tackle these issues in an integrated way. Each group has identified one bit of the elephant, whether tail or trunk, but cannot see the entire beast. This session will focus on holistic community planning—acknowledging the existing connections between local groups and the opportunities each create, and then weaving their multi-threaded interests into cooperative solutions.

Arts and the Renaissance of Place

Date:

Thursday, October 7, 2010

Time:

10:30am-12:00pm

Location:

Sunlight Peak, 37th Floor

If you’re skeptical of the correlation between art making and community building, this session will change your mind. Public art initiatives, business and creative sector partnerships, and arts-inspired economic development are the driving forces behind many newly successful communities. Through creative collaborations across disciplines and departments, towns develop a stronger sense of who they are, what they care about, and the kind of future they want to build.
